First Post!!!

Hey everyone, quick welcome to my blog, thanks for stopping by.

I had Math Class September 20th 2016 and that day it was really eye-opening. When I was younger I was taught math very close minded; meaning I was taught one specific way to things and that's how I learned. During the class I realized this more because of the problems we did together. There are so many ways to find one answer and some are much easier than the other, even easier than the way I learned. this opens up opportunity for multiple teaching strategies and more than one way to present a solution to a problem, helping each of the different learners in your class understand in their own way. This is important to grasp when becoming a teacher so you are not close minded and you are open to all the solutions to a problem. Take the example:

  272
+272

Instead of using the "borrowing the 1" or "moving the 1" over technique in addition and subtraction which I always used, there is a way simpler technique; simply solve by groups. 100's, then 10's, then 1's.

  272
+272
  400
  140
      4
  544

This was way simpler and new to me which I was amazed by.

Things to consider from this lesson:

Don't be set on one way of solving.
There are other ways, whether they are easier or harder, than I have been taught and it is important to recognize that.
I can adapt this to my learning and my teaching, being able to relate to all learning types that I can so that they can understand what I understand.

Finally we talked about the problems we should give to ur students. Problems should be inquiry based, starting directly with the problem. Yes they will not be able to answer but they will be thinking and working toward the problem. Scaffold, and give them resources to find he answer.

I think this lesson was amazing and eye-opening for me.

Until next time.

Matt.
